The Ultimate Guide to Designing the Perfect Business Blog

The Ultimate Guide to Designing the Perfect Business Blog

.

blog designYes, as an inbound marketer, your blog content has to be amazing. However, even the best content can be hampered by bad design. As a business becoming a blogging machine, it is easy to focus 100% on content and ignore valuable design elements of your blog that can act as powerful boosters of traffic and leads of your business.

Think about it this way: Would you buy an expensive sports car and drive around with four flat tires? You’d still be able to go fast, but not nearly as fast as you could be. A clear, lead-focused blog design will help turbo-charge the results of your inbound marketing content.

So what does a great business blog look like? The design itself could be one of an infinite number of choices. However great business blog designs share common traits of success.

1. A Call-to-Action in Every Blog Post – In a post about blog design, it would be simple for us to start out with some “fluffy” design advice. But that wouldn’t help your company’s bottom line, would it? Even if you stopped reading this post after this tip, you’d still leave with its most important takeaway. You MUST put a call-to-action in each of your blog posts. Yes, you should test the design and placement of your calls-to-action, but first and foremost, you need use them in your posts. This is one of the most powerful levers for transforming your blog into a well-designed lead generation machine.

Blog CTA Example resized 6002. Post Previews – Marketers must think like publishers. It’s easy to think of your blog as just a blog. Instead, you should think of it as a digital publication. Your blog is just like a trade magazine for your industry. One trait of magazines that people love is the table of contents that provide a preview for all of the articles in that issue. Instead of displaying your entire, most recent blog article on your blog’s homepage, display only an excerpt and an image from several of your most recent posts instead. This will allow visitors to scan some of your blog’s content and give them a choice of what to read first.

Post Preview Example resized 600

3. Clear Subscription Call-to-Action – Every visitor to your blog isn’t going to convert into a lead instantly. Some visitors will need to learn about your business over time. A way to help expedite this process is to get more visitors to subscribe to your blog via email or RSS. To do this, you need to have a clear call-to-action that encourages people to subscribe via either method.?

4. Clear Connection to the Core Business Website – Your blog isn’t an island. Instead, it is one part of a successful website. You blog design must make it clear and simple for a blog reader to get to key parts of your core website. It is great if you have awesome content, but it needs to be connected to your products or services to help move relevant visitors further along in the buying cycle. Have a clear blog navigation that connects to your website, and consider using some sidebar real estate to direct visitors to key website pages.

5. Limit Social Media Sharing Buttons – Too much of a good thing can be bad. Yes, you want people to share your blog posts, and having social sharing buttons on your blog is important. However, giving people too many sharing options is distracting. It actually causes users to become overwhelmed and subsequently take no action. Instead, limit the sharing buttons on your blog to only those networks that send traffic and leads to your business. If you don’t get any traffic from StumbleUpon, then why clutter your blog with its button?

6. Allow Simple Sorting of Content – Depending on how prolific of a writer you are and how long your business has been blogging, your blog design needs to make it easier for visitors to find older and relevant content. As a marketer, you have several design elements to help achieve this, including blog search, tagging, recommendation widgets, etc. As with social media sharing buttons, you don’t need to use all of these. Organize some user testing sessions to understand what people unfamiliar with your blog find to be the best methods for discovering past content.

7. Prominent Post Image Display – A great blog is visual. You shouldn’t knock readers over with block and blocks of text as soon as they arrive. Look at your blog design. How are you using images to draw in readers? There are many ways to showcase images from posts in the design of your blog. It can be as simple as an image next to an intro paragraph on your blog’s homepage or something far more customized. The important thing to remember is to not make assumptions on what your readers want. Again, conduct user tests to collect feedback and determine the best option for your audience instead.

Post Image resized 600

8. Prominent Headline Formatting – In your blog design, make sure that your headline is formatted correctly. This means it needs to be the star of the show when it comes to the text on a page. Make sure it is significantly larger in font size than the body or subhead text on the page. This may seem like a small detail, but making your headers pop makes a huge difference!

9. Fast Page Load Times – Online readers are impatient. When they are looking for information, they want it NOW. If your blog post takes too long to load, then your visitor will bounce and go elsewhere. In order to prevent this issue, you need to test your blog’s load time. This free tool from Pindom will tell you how long it takes for your blog to load. Ideally, the load time for your blog would be under 2 seconds.

10. Clean Sidebar – A blog’s sidebar can easily become the junkyard of the page. It’s all too easy to keep cluttering a sidebar until it has a seemingly endless list of useless widgets. Look at the sidebar of your blog. Look at each widget or design aspect of that sidebar. Does it really serve a purpose? Is that individual element encouraging the behavior that you want your readers to take? If the answer to either of these questions is no, then delete it from your sidebar. It’s about time: De-clutter that blog sidebar and get users to take the actions you want.

What other blog design best practices would you add to this list?

Lady Gaga Describes ‘Marry The Night’ Breakdown As ‘Honest Moment’

‘It is my personal way of seeing things. I am the artist of my own life,’ Gaga says of her self-directed video.

Lady Gaga exorcises her demons in her nearly 14-minute-long clip for “Marry the Night,” which premiered Thursday night. Depicting Gaga’s journey from an early career trauma to her reinvention as a successful pop star, she intended for art to imitate life in the clip.

For those wondering what left Gaga so traumatized, she explained it all to E! News preceding the video’s premiere. The video is a metaphor for how she felt when she was dropped from her first record label, Island Def Jam, before landing at her current home at Interscope.

“It was one of the worst days of my life and it happened quite quickly. But in my mind, when I think back on that period of my life, it all happened very slow,” she explained. “It is my personal way of seeing things. I am the artist of my own life. I choose to tell you what happened,” she continued. “If you give up after something like that, you were never destined to be an entertainer.”

In the video, after hearing from her ballet director that she should quit, she restructures her goal and plots her rise to pop stardom. “In order to be great writing music or at fishing or at being a mechanic or designing buildings, you have to acknowledge what is wrong with your work, or what is dishonest about it,” she said. “What have I not been really great at?” Those obstacles, she says, are a big part of what makes her who she is now. “I love the obstacles,” she said. “To marry your obstacles means I, the artist, wholeheartedly accept everything you throw at me. I am destined to struggle, I am destined to write music about the struggle and I accept it willingly.”

There are several scenes where Gaga is naked and experiencing a mental breakdown in her apartment. “Well, I was naked in real life when it happened,” she said, referring to the moment she found out she’d been dropped. “That’s probably the most honest moment in that video of everything I’ve ever done. My directorial decision was for them to just f—ing roll the cameras, because I couldn’t go in and out of the moment. I wonder if I will actually release that scene in its entirety — it’s about 30 minutes long.”

“It was intensely important to me that it was not too beautiful,” she added. “It was an incredible experience. It was amazing. It was absolutely amazing.”

This marks the first time that Gaga has directed a video all on her own. She recently split from her longtime creative director Laurieann Gibson, however, she clarified how the Haus works during the interview. “I have always been the creative director, and the Haus of Gaga has always been the creative force behind what we’ve done. There really aren’t many tremendous changes.

“I know it’s my directorial debut, but I’ve really created everything I’ve ever done in my career,” she continued. “I really didn’t do anything differently on this video that I didn’t do on the ‘Telephone’ video or the ‘Paparazzi’ video or the ‘Bad Romance’ video. I hope my fans will take from this the progression that you have to trust yourself to make mistakes.”

While the subject matter of the video is dark, there are also some tongue-in-cheek moments. “I always believe that you walk the line of humor if you’re being so incredibly serious,” she explained. “There’s something quite comical about the opening of the video, even though it’s quite sinister and dark,” she said. “It’s meant to be comical.”

So, how would Gaga sum it all up? “In essence, it’s insight into my entire creative process and the way that I view things,” she said.

Can hackers set your printer on fire?  (The Week)

New York ? Researchers from Columbia University demonstrate how a software flaw could put your printer at risk ? not to mention your entire computer network

Thanks to a security flaw, tens of millions of Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printers may be vulnerable to remote hijacking. A team of researchers from Columbia University claims that hackers may be able to control these printers from afar and ? rather horrifyingly ? even set them on fire. Here’s what you should know:

How could hackers control my printer?
Security experts have long theorized that printers could be exploited just like any other device connected to the internet. “Each time the printer accepts a print job from a computer,” it also looks for software updates,?says Kim Zetter at Wired. And these HP printers don’t “require a digital signature to verify that an upgrade is authentic.” That means “attackers can send specially crafted files to the printer that contain malicious code.” In a live demonstration, Columbia researchers quickly searched the web and found 40,000 devices that could be prone to infection.

?

What could hackers do once they’re in?
In one demonstration, the researchers sent “instructions that would continuously heat up the printer’s fuser ? which is designed to dry ink once it’s applied to paper ? eventually causing the paper to turn brown and smoke,” says Bob Sullivan at MSNBC. In that demonstration, the printer’s thermal switch shut down the machine before a real fire could start, but researchers believe other printers are more vulnerable.

Are there other concerns?
Yes, including the risk of identity theft. For instance, if you left your tax forms in your device’s scanner, a hacker could potentially copy them. But the real vulnerability, researchers say, is that “printers on a computer network are nearly always trusted by other computers.” A hacked printer “could act as a beachhead to attack a company’s network that was otherwise protected by a firewall.” ??

?

What does HP say?
In a press release, the company blasted these revelations as “sensational and inaccurate,” and said that “no customer has reported unauthorized access.” HP also said that all its printers have thermal switches that would prevent fires. Still, HP did confirm the existence of a potential vulnerability. “In other words,” says Jason Mick at Daily Tech, “HP admits that its printers could, in theory, be taken over by hackers, but it doesn’t believe that to have happened yet.”

Syracuse’s Boeheim not worried about job status

(AP) ? After his Syracuse Orange had run away to another victory, men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim turned his focus to a far more important matter.

Boeheim said Tuesday that “what happened on my watch” will be revealed once police complete their inquiry into child molestation accusations against his former longtime assistant.

“I never worried about my job status in 36 years,” Boeheim said at his first postgame news conference since Bernie Fine was fired Sunday. “I do my job. What happened on my watch, we will see. When the investigation is done, we will find out what happened on my watch.”

Advocates for sex abuse victims said Boeheim should resign or be fired for adamantly defending Fine and verbally disparaging two former Syracuse ball boys, two of the three men who have accused Fine of molesting them.

“Based on what I knew at that time, there were three investigations and nothing was corroborated,” Boeheim said. “That was the basis for me saying what I said. I said what I knew at the time.”

He said he didn’t regret backing Fine when the allegations were first made public.

“I’ve been with him for 36 years, known him for 48 years, went to school with him,” Boeheim said. “I think you owe a debt of allegiance and gratitude for what he did for the program. That’s what my reaction was. So be it.”

Fine has denied the allegations.

Boeheim received a standing ovation when he walked onto the court that bears his name for the game against Eastern Michigan that the Orange won, 84-48.

Boeheim said there’s a misconception that he’s bigger than the program because of his long tenure and great success. He has 863 career wins, fifth all-time in Division I.

“If I was gone today, this program would be fine. This program would do great,” he said. “Ten years from now, this program will do great. This is not Jim Boeheim. This is Syracuse University’s basketball program. It is not about me. It never has been about me.”

Asked to comment on Boeheim’s status earlier Tuesday, Syracuse University Chancellor Nancy Cantor said:

“Coach Boeheim is our coach. … We’re very pleased with what he said Sunday night, and we stand by it.”

After initially saying Fine’s first two accusers were lying to make money in the wake of the Penn State University child sex abuse scandal, Boeheim backed off those comments Sunday.

“What is most important is that this matter be fully investigated and that anyone with information be supported to come forward so that the truth can be found,” Boeheim said in a statement. “I deeply regret any statements I made that might have inhibited that from occurring or been insensitive to victims of abuse.”

One of the accusers, Bobby Davis, first contacted Syracuse police in 2002 regarding Fine, but there was no investigation because the statute of limitations had passed. Kevin Quinn, a Syracuse spokesman, said police did not inform the university of Davis’ allegations then.

On Tuesday, Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler said Dennis DuVal, a former SU basketball player who was police chief in 2002, knew of the allegations against Fine.

Fowler said DuVal, who played for the Orange from 1972-74, was aware of Davis’ accusations in 2002 that Fine sexually abused him.

Because Davis said the abuse stopped 12 years earlier, Syracuse Det. Doug Fox told him the statute of limitations had passed, meaning an arrest was not possible. Fox advised his supervisor in the abused persons unit, but didn’t file a formal report. The detective is still with the department, but not in the same unit.

A phone message left with DuVal was not immediately returned.

Fowler said Syracuse police will change their procedures moving forward.

“I was not the chief in 2002 and I cannot change the procedures in place at that time or the way this matter was then handled,” Fowler said in the statement. “But what I can and will do as chief today is ensure that moving forward all reports of sexual abuse are formally documented.”

On Nov. 17, Davis’ allegations resurfaced.

Davis, now 39, told ESPN that Fine molested him beginning in 1984 and that the sexual contact continued until he was around 27. A ball boy for six years, Davis said the abuse occurred at Fine’s home, at Syracuse basketball facilities and on team road trips, including the 1987 Final Four. Davis’ stepbrother, Mike Lang, 45, who also was a ball boy, told ESPN that Fine began molesting him while he was in the fifth or sixth grade.

Boeheim said during his news conference that ball boys have never traveled with the team.

A third accuser went public Sunday. Zach Tomaselli, who faces sexual assault charges in Maine involving a 14-year-old boy, said he told police last week that Fine molested him in 2002 in a Pittsburgh hotel room.

Now the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Secret Service have taken the lead in the Fine investigation.

Also Sunday, ESPN played an audiotape, obtained and recorded by Davis, of an October 2002 telephone conversation between him and Fine’s wife, Laurie. ESPN said it hired a voice recognition expert to verify the voice on the tape and the network said it was determined to be that of Laurie Fine.

During the call to the woman, Davis repeatedly asks her what she knew about the alleged molestation and she says she knew “everything that went on.”

On Tuesday night, Boeheim began his postgame news conference by reading a statement:

“It’s hard to put everything into words,” Boeheim said. “I thought a lot today about different things. I’m saddened in many ways by what’s unfolded, and I’m looking forward to a time when we can talk and learn from what has happened.

“There is an important investigation going on, which I fully support, and I can’t add anything to that by speaking more about that now,” he said. “The investigation and all that we can learn from it is what is important.”

Before the game, some fans offered their support for Boeheim.

“I feel sorry that he stuck up for a friend,” said 40-year-old Mike Wong of Syracuse. “He was just sticking up for Bernie. He didn’t understand the situation. I think the chancellor did the right thing.”

“It’s sad,” added 29-year-old Michael Knowles of Syracuse. “We’ve all stuck up for a friend and then realized we shouldn’t have. He (Boeheim) didn’t do anything wrong.”

Not everyone agrees.

In the last home game against Colgate 10 days ago, Fine’s customary seat was left vacant, and players tapped it as a symbolic gesture in support of Fine. On Tuesday night, there was no empty seat.

And the Rev. Robert Hoatson, president of Road to Recovery, a group that supports victims of sexual abuse, was pushing for another empty seat.

“We want to keep saying that Jim Boeheim should resign or be fired,” Hoatson said.

Gingrich trails in organizing in early-voting Iowa (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich leads the 2012 pack in buzz but trails his rivals in just about every other category in Iowa.

The former House speaker is striving for a remarkable comeback with the smallest staff and the fewest precinct-level campaign backers of the seven candidates competing in the Jan. 3 presidential caucuses that kick off voting in the fight for the GOP nomination.

Gingrich, who casts himself as the idea candidate bucking convention, is betting that his prescriptions for what ails America ? more so than tried-and-true campaign tools ? can help him win in Iowa, a state where a stellar organization traditionally has been the key to turning out supporters to local political meetings called caucuses on a cold, Midwestern winter night.

“The traditional ways might not be the most efficient way. Newt has shown us campaigning now is different,” said Katie Koberg, Gingrich’s deputy Iowa caucus director. “It’s not about how you many staff you can hire.”

Can it work? It’s a gamble.

Gingrich’s task was made more difficult this year after his campaign imploded and Iowa moved its caucuses earlier in the year, on the heels of the holiday season.

But Koberg says a combination of traditional staff work and online recruiting could help Gingrich piece together an organization that could harness the momentum he has gathered.

With just four staff members ? a fifth is scheduled to come aboard Friday ? Gingrich’s team in Iowa is at once reaching out through traditional methods, attending party functions and signing up supporters in person, and reaching out in less conventional ways.

For months, Gingrich has led a campaign on life support, raising money on the Internet by capitalizing on highly praised debate performances that, in turn, helped him finance his trip to the next debate.

Gingrich often repeats his campaign’s website address during nationally broadcast interviews and debates, which has drawn Iowans into his organization. Interested Iowans get a call back from Koberg or one of her aides, are put on the mailing list, and are asked about volunteer work and, importantly, whether they will caucus for Gingrich.

There are risks to Gingrich’s shoestring Iowa campaign. He holds few of his own events, choosing instead to appear at businesses or Republican Party functions. The events don’t cost his campaign money to set up, but the audiences may be less reliably interested in hearing him.

On Wednesday night, for instance, he was scheduled to appear at an advocacy group’s meeting in western Iowa’s Council Bluffs, and Thursday at an insurance company, association meeting and county GOP function in the Des Moines area.

But it’s all he can do, given that there are only five weeks until the caucuses. And the approach fits with Gingrich’s confidence that his appeal as a tested congressional leader with an array of post-congressional career policy hallmarks will attract Republicans searching for an alternative to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who has been a leader in national polls and in Iowa, despite a less aggressive Iowa campaign.

There’s also a recent precedent for a successful, unconventional approach in Iowa.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee vaulted to the top of the polls in Iowa four years ago on a shoestring budget and little organizational structure. However, Huckabee, a former Baptist minister, made deep inroads with Iowa’s conservative evangelical clergy and Christian home-school advocates, giving him key niches.

Gingrich, on the other hand, is cobbling together a coalition of evangelicals, with supporters such as longtime social conservative Loras Schulte, and establishment Republicans such as the Iowa House Majority Leader Linda Upmeyer.

Brilliant. Your wary, I suppose I can understand why. To be quite honest I would like to here your first take on the introduction. When you were reading it did any ideas or presumptions about the plot spring to mind?

I don’t mean to jump on you at all I’d just like to gain your thoughts before I feed you my own, you never know they could be different.

Well first, I don’t mind a story that is…open like this is. I like the freedom, it seems character driven, also good. I read the description and it does seem like an interesting premise. What I was wondering was how much input are you looking for, since you said this was already an ongoing story. I would assume facts like places and perhaps mythos is already covered. What sort of role does this mysterious man fulfil? Is that open-ended as well? I would like to have an exchange with you as to see if your style and mine, meshes. Otherwise there is very little point in going at this guns blazing.

I agree it would be a good idea to exchange however…now may not be the best time on my behalf. I live in england, it’s late and I have work in the morning. I wouldn’t want to give you some limp paragraph that I’ve done whilst my eyes are partially shut!

This is very open as I wouldn’t like to influence you too much with what I’ve already written. I’ll gladly give you a more detailed insight in to what I’ve already sorted out but could it be tomorrow? I just wanted to see how much interest this gathered tonight.
